YVONNE OKWARA LEAVES ROYAL MEDIA SERVICES, LANDS NEW ROLE AT SHUGA GLOBAL

Veteran Kenyan journalist Yvonne Okwara has left Royal Media Services (RMS) after an eight-year stint at Citizen TV, marking a new chapter in her career with an appointment at Shuga Global.

Okwara's departure from the broadcaster became official on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, when she presented her final broadcast, bringing an end to her time at one of Kenya's leading television stations.

According to reports published on Wednesday, October 28, Okwara is joining Shuga Global, formerly known as the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, an organisation that uses media and storytelling to address health and social issues affecting young people.

Her new appointment marks a shift from mainstream television journalism to a role involving partnerships and engagement beyond the newsroom.

Okwara's New Role at Shuga Global

Reports indicate that Okwara has been appointed Head of Investments and Partnerships at Shuga Global, although another description of her position identifies her as Head of Government Relations for East Africa.

The organisation is known for using entertainment, storytelling and media initiatives to engage young audiences on issues such as sexual health and other social challenges.

Her experience in journalism, public communication and interviewing prominent figures is expected to be relevant to her work in the new position.

However, further details about her specific responsibilities and the scope of her appointment have not been independently confirmed.

Emotional Farewell at Citizen TV

Okwara's exit was marked by tributes from colleagues, including Royal Media Services Editorial Director Linus Kaikai, who described her departure as one of the most difficult moments of his leadership at the broadcaster.

Kaikai acknowledged her contribution to the newsroom and noted that her departure would leave a gap in the media industry.

During her time at Citizen TV, Okwara established herself as one of Kenya's prominent television journalists, particularly through her coverage of politics, business and public affairs.

She became known for her direct interviewing style, frequently pressing political leaders and other public figures to explain their positions and account for their decisions.

Her approach earned her recognition among viewers who valued rigorous questioning and accountability in public discourse.

A Career Beyond Mainstream Television

Okwara's move to Shuga Global comes after more than two decades in the media industry, during which she built experience across radio and television.

Her departure from Citizen TV closes a significant chapter in her broadcasting career while opening an opportunity to apply her communication and media experience in a different professional environment.

The move also highlights the range of career paths available to experienced journalists beyond traditional newsrooms, including strategic communication, institutional partnerships and public engagement.

As she begins her new role, attention will be on how she applies her experience in journalism to the organisation's work across East Africa.
