KENYA MET FORECASTS RAINFALL IN 24 COUNTIES AS SHORT RAINS INTENSIFY

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall in 24 counties this week as the October-December short rains season gathers momentum across the country.

In an update issued on Thursday, the weather agency said showers are expected in parts of West Pokot, Siaya, Elgeyo Marakwet, Bungoma, Kakamega, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Kericho, Kisii, Homa Bay, Kisumu, Mandera, Wajir, Marsabit, Nyandarua, Meru, Nyeri, Embu, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi and Lamu.

The department also warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots in parts of Turkana, Samburu and Marsabit counties, urging residents to remain alert to changing weather conditions.

The forecast comes as Kenya enters the October-December rainfall season, which is expected to bring varying amounts of rain across different parts of the country.

The weather patterns are likely to be influenced by several climate factors, including the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and other atmospheric systems.

Farmers Expected to Benefit

The anticipated rainfall is expected to improve soil moisture, support planting activities and promote pasture regeneration, offering potential relief to farmers and livestock keepers, particularly in arid and semi-arid areas.

Increased water availability could also support agricultural production and improve pasture conditions for livestock.

However, the department has cautioned that heavy rainfall could trigger flooding, waterlogging, crop diseases and disruptions to transport and farming activities.

Parts of the Coast and northeastern regions have been highlighted as areas that could experience heavy rainfall during the season.

Residents living in flood-prone areas, particularly near rivers and in low-lying locations, have been urged to take precautions and follow official weather advisories.

The World Meteorological Organization has also projected wetter-than-normal conditions across the Greater Horn of Africa during the final quarter of 2026 amid the strengthening El Niño conditions.

The October-December season is particularly significant for Kenya and other countries in the region, as it contributes substantially to annual rainfall in several areas.

Residents are encouraged to keep track of official weather updates as the season progresses.
