GOVERNMENT SETS ASIDE KSH25 BILLION FOR SGR LAND COMPENSATION

The government has set aside KSh25 billion to compensate landowners whose properties will be affected by the extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Naivasha to Kisumu and Malaba.

The National Land Commission (NLC) is continuing public participation and land valuation in Narok County as the government prepares to negotiate compensation with affected landowners.

Kenya Railways Corporation Managing Director Philip Mainga said the commission was engaging communities along the railway corridor to explain the land acquisition process. He added that Kenya Railways had received early access to some sections to allow construction to proceed as valuation and compensation negotiations continue.

Some residents have welcomed the project, citing its potential to improve transport and connect their communities to wider markets. Mzee Stephen Ruto, a resident of Kapkesosio village in Narok, said the railway would link Bomet County to other parts of Kenya, the East African region and beyond.

Construction of Phase 2B of the SGR project is underway in Narok and other sections of the corridor. The railway will cover approximately 98 kilometres within Narok County, with the wider route passing through Bomet, Kericho, Nyamira, Homa Bay and Kisumu counties.

The government expects the railway to improve the movement of goods from western Kenya to major markets, including the Port of Mombasa. Plans also include logistics hubs and value-addition facilities to support key economic sectors along the route.

Agriculture, livestock and tourism are among the sectors expected to benefit in Narok, while logistics facilities in Bomet and Kericho are planned to support the tea industry. Kisumu is also expected to host a fish logistics hub to improve storage and transportation.

The project is expected to create jobs and provide business opportunities for communities along the railway corridor. However, land valuation, property verification and timely compensation remain key issues as construction progresses.

President William Ruto launched the project in March 2026, with construction expected to take approximately two years. The Narok station is expected to be partially complete by June 2027.

The National Land Commission is expected to continue engaging affected residents, verifying property details and assessing land and developments before compensation payments are made.
