Kenya Pharmacy and Poisons Board warns against improper use of cetirizine for claims of inducing labor

Kenya's Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has warned the public against the improper use of cetirizine, following claims circulating on social media that the drug can be used to dry or induce labor.

In a statement released on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the board said it had identified false information linking cetirizine use with claims of inducing or drying the uterus, emphasizing that such use has no scientific basis.

According to PPB, cetirizine is an antihistamine medication used to reduce allergy symptoms, including allergic rhinitis and urticaria.

The board clarified that the drug is intended to be taken orally, following health professionals' instructions. However, it is not approved for uterine use, and there is no validated scientific evidence showing it can induce labor.

Furthermore, PPB warned that inserting cetirizine tablets into the uterus can cause adverse effects such as burning, itching sensations, pain, and discomfort.

The board added that using health products not designed for uterine application can disrupt the normal uterine environment that helps prevent infections, thereby increasing the risk of infection.

In that warning, PPB also cautioned against using cetirizine at doses exceeding the recommended amount. Overuse can cause excessive drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, agitation, confusion, tremors, rapid heartbeat, and urinary problems.

Accordingly, the board urges the public to avoid inserting cetirizine tablets or other drugs intended for oral use into the uterus, to refrain from taking the drug at doses above the recommended level, or using it for unapproved purposes.

Women facing uterine health challenges, including uterine dryness and other reproductive health issues, are advised to seek counsel from health professionals rather than rely on unverified information and claims spread on social media.

PPB emphasized the importance of proper medication use and following health professionals' advice to protect against adverse effects that can result from inappropriate drug use.
