Construction work at the Mombasa Municipal Stadium with concerns about the project's completion by April 2027.

The construction project of the Mombasa Municipal Stadium still faces challenges, with questions about whether it will be completed by April 2027 as expected by football stakeholders.

The project, which began in 2015, has suffered years of delays, leaving football fans, clubs, and residents of the Coast region waiting for a modern stadium that would help develop sports and youth talent.

In February 2026, the national government announced plans to take responsibility for completing the project through the Ministry of Defense, with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) expected to oversee the remaining work.

That step raised hopes for the resumption of construction activities after years of delay. However, reports of unfinished official agreements have raised concerns about the pace of the project's implementation.

Construction Reaches 30%

A project progress report published in August 2026 showed that construction had reached approximately 30%.

The stadium is expected to have a capacity of 15,000 spectators, with the project cost estimated at KSh 1.7 billion.

This situation has raised questions about whether the remaining work can be completed within the scheduled timeframe, especially considering that Kenya is expected to co‑host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) together with Uganda and Tanzania.

FKF Wants the Stadium Completed by April 2027

The chairman of the Kenya Football Federation (FKF) in Mombasa County, Alamin Ahmed Abdalla, has urged the Ministry of Sports to ensure the stadium is completed by April 2027.

Abdalla emphasized the importance of modern sports infrastructure to boost football development in the Coast region and to enable the hosting of national league matches as well as international tournaments.

Football stakeholders are calling on the government to fulfill its promise and accelerate the remaining work so that local clubs have a suitable venue for their matches.

Mombasa Clubs Face Stadium Challenges

The stadium is expected to become a key hub for Mombasa clubs and the wider Coast area, including Mombasa United and Bandari FC.

Mombasa United, which competes in the national premier league, is expected to benefit from having a modern home stadium. Bandari FC and other local clubs will also have more venue options for important matches.

The lack of a suitable stadium has forced clubs to rely on alternative venues, limiting their ability to schedule matches and attract large crowds.

Stadium to Boost Football and Sports Tourism

When completed, the stadium is expected to contribute to football development, provide opportunities for talented youth, and increase the Coast region's capacity to host national and international competitions.

Furthermore, the project could stimulate sports tourism by attracting teams, fans, and visitors to the city of Mombasa, one of the country's key tourist destinations.

However, with April 2027 approaching and concerns about the project's status, football stakeholders are urging the national government and the Ministry of Sports to provide clarification on the remaining work and the timeline for completing the stadium.

For Mombasa football fans, the stadium's completion would be a long‑awaited milestone after more than a decade of delays.
