Kenya has recorded its second Ebola-related death after a 65-year-old woman died on Friday, October 23, while receiving treatment at an infectious disease unit in Nairobi.

According to the Ministry of Health, the woman was the country's third confirmed case of Bundibugyo virus disease and a close family member of the first patient, who died on October 5.

The woman had been placed under quarantine as a known contact of the initial patient. She developed symptoms on October 13 and was admitted to an infectious disease unit the same day, where she received supportive medical care.

Her death brings the total number of fatalities in Kenya to two among nine confirmed cases. The seven surviving patients remain under treatment at two designated isolation facilities, according to the Ministry of Health.

Health authorities have identified 135 contacts linked to the initial case and have been conducting contact tracing and monitoring to establish whether anyone else may have been exposed to the virus.

The Ministry has reported no evidence of wider community transmission, with all confirmed cases linked to a single cluster associated with the initial patient.

Kenya confirmed its first imported case of Bundibugyo virus disease in early October after a Kenyan man who had been living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo travelled to Kenya through Uganda.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to involve substantial transmission, prompting enhanced surveillance and response measures across affected countries.

Kenyan authorities are continuing to implement infection prevention measures, monitor contacts and coordinate with regional health agencies to limit further transmission.

The public health response includes screening at points of entry, laboratory testing, isolation of confirmed cases and monitoring people who may have been exposed to the virus.

As of October 24, health authorities have not reported evidence of wider community transmission in Kenya.
