JUNIOUR STARLETS THRASH SAMOA 4-0 TO REACH U-17 WOMEN'S WORLD CUP ROUND OF 16

Kenya's Junior Starlets have qualified for the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup following a commanding 4-0 victory over Samoa on Sunday, October 25.
The victory at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé, Morocco, secured Kenya's first-ever progression beyond the group stage of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.
Head coach Mildred Cheche's side entered the match under pressure after losing their opening two fixtures against China and the United States. The team needed a convincing victory and favourable results elsewhere to remain in contention for a place in the knockout stage.
Kenya responded with an emphatic performance, scoring twice in each half to finish third in Group E and secure qualification as one of the tournament's four best third-placed teams.
Bakari Leads Junior Starlets' Goal Rush
Striker Mwanakombo Bakari gave Kenya an early advantage, finding the back of the net in the fourth minute to put the Junior Starlets in control.
Kenya continued to apply pressure on the Samoan defence, creating opportunities as they searched for a second goal. Their persistence paid off in the 44th minute when Brenda Awuor scored to give the East Africans a 2-0 lead at half-time.
The Junior Starlets maintained their attacking momentum after the break, with Gaudancia Maloba extending the advantage in the 62nd minute.
Bakari struck again two minutes later to complete her brace and make it 4-0, putting the result beyond Samoa's reach.
Kenya also missed a penalty that could have increased the margin, but the four goals proved sufficient to strengthen the team's goal difference and boost its chances of advancing.

Junior Starlets Make History for Kenyan Football
The result marked a significant milestone for Kenyan football, with the Junior Starlets becoming the first Kenyan team to progress beyond the group stage of a FIFA World Cup.
Kenya's campaign had started with a 3-0 defeat to China before the team suffered a 6-1 loss to the United States. Lindey Atieno scored Kenya's only goal in the match against the Americans.
Those results left the Junior Starlets needing a strong response against Samoa to keep their tournament hopes alive.
Kenya finished third in Group E with three points, behind China and the United States. China's 3-2 victory over the Americans in the other group fixture also influenced the final group standings.
The Junior Starlets ultimately advanced as one of the four best third-placed teams, turning around their campaign after a difficult start.
The achievement builds on Kenya's debut at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in 2024 in the Dominican Republic, where the team did not progress beyond the group stage.
Their qualification for the Round of 16 represents further progress for the young side as it continues to gain experience on the international stage.
Junior Starlets to Face Japan in Round of 16
Kenya will now face Japan in the Round of 16 on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Morocco. Kick-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. East African Time.
Japan enter the knockout stage as a formidable opponent after topping Group D with nine points from three matches, scoring nine goals without conceding.
The encounter will present a significant challenge for Cheche's team, which will be seeking to build on its emphatic victory over Samoa and extend its historic run at the tournament.
Although reaching the knockout stage is already a major achievement for Kenya, the Junior Starlets will have an opportunity to make further history when they take on the Japanese side.
Their performance against Samoa has revived the team's campaign and given Kenyan football supporters fresh reason to follow the young squad as it continues its journey in Morocco.
