KENYA METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT ISSUES HEAVY RAINFALL WARNING

The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority has warned of heavy rainfall, strong winds and rough sea conditions across several parts of the country, with the heaviest downpours expected between Monday, October 26, and Wednesday, October 28.
In an advisory issued on Friday, October 23, the weather agency said moderate to heavy rainfall was expected from October 24 to October 30 across 46 counties, including areas in the Coast, Northeastern, Western and Rift Valley regions, as well as the Central Highlands and parts of Nairobi.
The advisory indicates that rainfall intensity is expected to peak between October 26 and 28 before gradually decreasing towards October 30.
Counties listed among the areas likely to receive rainfall include Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu in the Coast region. Others include Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, Isiolo, Nakuru, Kisumu, Kakamega, Bungoma, Kiambu and Nyeri.
Parts of Nairobi, Machakos, Kitui, Makueni and Taita-Taveta are also covered by the forecast.
The agency warned that the rainfall could be accompanied by gusty winds, reduced visibility and flash floods. It cautioned that flooding may occur downstream, including in areas that have not experienced heavy rainfall locally.
Residents in the affected areas have been urged to remain alert and take precautions, particularly when travelling or living near rivers and other flood-prone locations.
The weather agency also forecast strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots, equivalent to approximately 46 kilometres per hour, in coastal, eastern and northern parts of the country.
Along the Coast, ocean wave heights exceeding two metres are expected on Sunday, October 25. Fishers, mariners and other people undertaking maritime activities have been advised to exercise caution because of the potentially hazardous sea conditions.
To reduce the risk of lightning strikes during thunderstorms, residents have been advised to avoid taking shelter under trees or standing near metal-grilled windows.
Meanwhile, high temperatures are expected to persist in parts of northern Kenya. Residents in the affected areas have been encouraged to remain hydrated and limit prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
The agency said further updates would be issued if weather conditions change.
Residents have been advised to monitor official forecasts and follow guidance from relevant authorities throughout the advisory period.
