Gonzi Rai urges government to curb elephant incursions in Kinango

Kinango MP Idd Gonzi Rai has urged the government to take swift action to address elephant incursions in the valleys of Ndavaya, Puma, Samburu Chengoni and Mackinnon, saying the situation has been a long‑standing challenge for residents of those areas.
Speaking in the Mackinnon valley, Rai said the elephant incursions have been frightening residents, while also affecting economic activities and development efforts in the affected areas.
The MP said farmers have been suffering losses as elephants raid farms and destroy crops, a situation that could threaten food security and the incomes of families who depend on subsistence farming.
Rai has called on the wildlife management department to establish a barrier and implement additional strategies to control elephant movements, emphasizing the importance of protecting citizens' lives and property.
He said strong measures are needed to reduce human‑wildlife conflicts and enable residents to carry out their daily activities without fear of elephant incursions.
Elephant incursions continue to be a challenge in areas where human settlements and agricultural activities intersect with wildlife zones. Strategies to curb these incursions are essential for protecting lives, crops and livestock, while also considering wildlife conservation.
